1. Please name one animation that influence you most, and how did it influence you?

Batman cartoons or The Simpsons. That's when I really started to draw a lot.

2. Imagine that if animé was introduced by the US instead of Japan about 90 years ago, how today's design scene would be different?

What draws me to anime is how unfamiliar it is from American animation, both conceptually and stylistically. If it was introduced by the United States, I think the appeal would be a lot less.

3. Please name one of your most recent favorite animation / comic / director / animator?

Ian Brauner is an animator living in Manhattan. He is a graduate of Ringling School of Art & Design, class of 2003.

Synopsis

"Monsters"

This piece shows an abstract city that has become a playground for strange or funny creatures. The design of the city is based on photographs that I took of different parts of building. I pulled what was most interesting and broke that down into simple shapes and forms. I wanted a New York feel without anything too recognizable or specific.

The creature designs were pulled from different sketchbooks of mine. I wanted the shape of the characters to have some slight imperfections, so I created paper cutouts of each character and used them as reference for the 3D models. Since the piece was created digitally, it was important to me that it had a little bit of a tactile quality.
